The Caribbean is a popular holiday destination for many, with very good reason. Beautiful beaches with fine coral sand and turquoise waters are perfect for sunbathing and enjoying a refreshing tropical fruit cocktail. There are many different islands to choose from in the area, which can make it difficult to settle on a particular one for your holiday. If you are having trouble making a decision then a cruise that takes in several islands could be the answer. Your ship’s captain can get on with the job of navigating his way around this beautiful corner of the world, while you concentrate on your tan and catching up with some reading. Finding your way around at sea is something that has always been best left to the experts, although how it is done on modern vessels is very different to the sextant and stars method that past sailors used to rely on. Cruise ships, in common with other oceangoing boats, are fitted with GPS technology, similar to that which is used in fleet tracking solutions on land.
There are some differences as they are unable to use mobile telephone networks to communicate their position to base, and so must be able to do this via a satellite link. One form of tracking that can sound a little Orwellian at first, but is in fact very useful in some circumstances, is people tracking. If you are worried that your kids could get lost on a large cruise ship for instance, then you might want to consider looking into this. These systems consist of a handheld unit and electronic tags that can be attached to an item of clothing or a child’s mp3 player. They are handy for keeping an eye on children when in unfamiliar environments, and can provide peace of mind for both children, who know their parents can be summoned with the press of a button in the event of an emergency, and the parents who can monitor the whereabouts of their children and be ready to assist them if they run into any problems.
The tags communicate with the handheld using radio waves which means they can be used indoors as well as outside, as the waves can easily travel through walls and other obstacles. Some of the cruise ships that you may sail on are vast, and you could easily end up getting lost on them yourself. The largest vessel built, which is about to come into service later on this year, is over a thousand feet long and has some sixteen decks so you can imagine how easy it would be to lose your way. As an adult you can of course simply ask a crew member for help so there is no need to tag yourself! With such a large amount of space available there are many things to do while you are on a cruise. Haute cuisine, with menus designed by top chefs is a feature of some ships, and beauty spas are popular too.
