There are many different types of holiday to choose from today. Some people want nothing more than guaranteed sunshine, a beach and a good book. Others like a more stimulating type of holiday where they can combine a relaxing break with a chance to spend some time learning more about a hobby or discovering new ones. Cruises with themes can be a great solution for people who are looking for the latter. Fine food and wine holidays are a popular choice for many, where you can learn, and enjoy some tasting sessions as well. There are basically two different ways that these holidays are arranged. Some of them will be booked through a company that specialises in a particular theme and charters a ship from one of the well known operators, leaving them to take care of all the nautical side of things.
Others are arranged by the company that runs the cruises and the activities are available for all the passengers to participate in, usually at no extra cost. There are many different themes and of course dozens of different routes to choose from. The operators can keep track of exactly where each ship is at any given moment through satellite equipment that must be installed on all ships that carry more than 12 passengers and travel on the open seas. Unlike GPS receivers on land, which utilise mobile telephone networks to communicate with tracking systems, those on ships that are used on cruises that go more than eight to ten miles offshore, are out of range of these networks and must use satellite communication services in order to broadcast their position. Some companies have websites where members of the public can check on the position of all that company’s ships.
When these systems are fitted on ships, they can of course be used for navigation purposes as well as tracking, but the main reason they are used is for safety reasons in the event that the vessel experiences any problems while at sea. Rescue services are able to quickly pinpoint your ship’s location when you are on cruises, which can save valuable time. Of course, today’s well equipped vessels rarely encounter problems, but it is nice to know that you are still in contact with civilisation, even when you are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Where you choose to go on your holiday will depend partly on the time of year, how long you wish to be away for and where you are setting out from. The type of ships in operation range from those that carry only a few hundred passengers, with a more intimate feel, to the giants of the seas which can carry thousands of people on cruises all around the world. If you have limited time available then you can choose to fly to another part of the world and join up with a ship when it docks there. A browse on the internet should give you plenty of food for thought.
